We are introduced to Gideon and her home planet without being given any real information. Where do I start… I supposed I’ll do it the same way Tamsyn Muir did: with the Ninth House and its current resident, swordswoman and frequent user of curse-words Gideon. Of course, some things are better left dead. Without Gideon’s sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. If Harrowhark succeeds she will become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. But her childhood nemesis won’t set her free without a service. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy.īrought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as necromantic skeletons. Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead bullshit. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon the Ninth is the most fun you’ll ever have with a skeleton. And that cover is amazeballs! So why was this book such a mess? I’m going to try and explain why it didn’t work for me but, honestly, I just wish I could understand why so many other people love this so much.įirst line: In the myriadic year o our Lord – the ten thousandth year of the King Undying, the kindly Prince of Death! – Gideon Nav packed her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and she escaped from the House of the Ninth. And “lesbian necromancers in space” sounds super cool. Is it me? I mean, everybody on the internet seems to love this book, including lots of people whose opinion I trust. It doesn’t happen too often that a book I am extremely excited for turns out to be this disappointing.
